Low temperature in-situ cleavage system

Crystal cleavage refers to the separation of the fractured surface of a crystal along a certain crystal plane (i.e., cleavage plane) under the action of normal stress; for two-dimensional layered materials, the layers are bonded by strong covalent bonds or ionic bonds, while the interlayers are mostly bonded by weaker van der Waals forces. Generally, a simple ceramic stick plus glue method can be used to peel off fresh and high-quality crystal planes; but for materials that tend to be three-dimensional in structure, such as metals, it is difficult to obtain a smooth cleavage plane due to the strong interlayer force.

The ultra-high vacuum low-temperature in-situ cleavage system developed by Fermion Instruments can well protect the surface of fresh samples in an ultra-high vacuum environment. Low temperature can increase the brittleness of the sample and obtain a smoother cleavage plane. The equipment is vacuum-connected with the surface analysis equipment to realize the entire process of in-situ dissociation, polishing, and transfer, which meets the experimental research of different users on the surface properties of various materials and expands a richer source of samples for angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Specifications
● Cleavage can be achieved in low temperature environment, the lowest temperature is <100K. For materials such as metals, a better cleavage surface can be obtained below the brittle point● Cleavage can be achieved in ultra-high vacuum environment, with a vacuum degree better than 5x10-10 mbar
● Accurate crystal plane cleavage can be achieved for large-sized samples, with a maximum cross-sectional size of 5mm x 5mm● Easy to operate, in-situ cleavage can be achieved with the help of Wobble Stick
● The cleavage surface can achieve atomic-level flatness● Adopting standard Flag Type Sample Holder, it has good compatibility and can be seamlessly connected to surface analysis equipment such as ARPES, STM, XPS, etc.
● In addition to being an independent system interconnected through vacuum, the cleavage table can also be installed as a compatible module under the ARPES and STM sample tables to expand the research scope of the existing system
